Eating Out

December 7, 2013

I heard about The Guardian Coffee Shop aka #guardiancoffee a couple of months ago on Twitter and it was one of those things where I was not sure if it was a spoof or just a huge gimmick. It seemed absurd that the highly respected newspaper would open up a coffee shop with no or very little hype. I stumbled upon it last week after visiting The Cheeky Parlour. It is situated in the much hyped Boxpark in Shoreditch and the aim is to provide a place for journalists and tech shakers and movers to meet and share ideas. Sounds great in theory but I am not sure how this will or has panned out.

First of all it is a pop up cafe which has been launched in association with EE. Each table has an iPad but this is locked to The Guardian website. Sadly the tables are pretty small and are dominated by the iPad so there is little room to spread out and relax as you would in a regular cafe. Also there is even little space for people to work on a laptop of tablet. There is a large screen on the wall displaying tweets and information on the bestselling drinks. Of course there are FREE copies of the paper as well as special supplements dotted about. I didn’t get a chance to test out the wifi but I have heard that it is not open which seems a bit off considering the nature of the place.

The coffee is pretty good, I bought a Latte which was pretty decent but the price is hefty – £2.70 for a small cup. On a positive note the decor is pretty refreshing with stylish decor, lots of light and pretty cool illustrations on the wall. If you are in Shoreditch and the mood for a coffee but cannot bear the idea of Starbucks or Costa Coffee then this might be the place for you.

You can find #guardiancoffee at Boxpark, 2-4 Bethnal Green Rd, London, E1 6GY.
