Although I am spiritual I am not religious aka I don’t go to church. so TV shows or films that centre around churches have never interested me. That was until I discovered Greenleaf. I kept on coming across this show on Netflix when I was browsing for something to watch and one day I decided to give it a try. An hour later I was hooked.
Greenleaf is an American television drama series, which focusses on the scandalous lives of the Greenleaf family. It is also set on their vast Memphis megachurch with predominantly African-American members.
The show’s protagonist is Grace, played by Merle Dandridge who returns home after a 20 year absence. She is welcomed with opened arms by her father, James played by Keith David who is the patriarch of the house and the head of the church. Grace’s return is not warmly received by her mother, Lady Mae, played by Lynn Whitfield. Also her younger sister, Charity, played by Deborah Joy Winans seems to resent her presence too. To be honest, Charity has other problems what with her husband’s roving eye.
Then there is Grace’s brother, Jacob played by Lamman Rucker who is struggling to get out of the shadow of his domineering father. Matters are not helped by his meddling and ambitious wife, Kerissa, played by Kim Hawthorne who is determined to get him to the top at any means.
Grace’s return to the family fold is to bury her beloved sister, Faith who has taken her own life. Compounded by grief, Grace is determined to get answers about her sister’s tragic death. The show is broadcasted on OWN aka the Oprah Winfrey Network and she also has a guest appearance on the show.
This show is just riveting – it has all the elements of a big frothy soap opera. Big characters who are complex and flawed as well as over the top storylines. It is Merle Dandridge who carries this show though – as wonderful as Keith David and Lynn Whitfield are (and they are amazing!), it is Dandridge who captures the spirit of Greenleaf.
There are two series of Greenleaf ready for you to watch on Netflix – the first series was very entertaining and you will be glad to know that the second series was just as good. In fact you really get to see the characters develop and become more rounded. Greenleaf has been renewed for a third season.
