The Screen Nation Digital-IS Media Awards

Screen Nation Digital Awards

The cast from Brothers With No Game.

Last month I was invited to attend the Screen Nation Digital-IS Media Awards at Google HQ. The awards were presented in conjunction with Vox Africa and sponsored by Google hence the location and showcased the best online content produced by Black British and international digital media creatives. The objective of the awards was to celebrate the digital pioneers who are producing, directing and funding their own content for the world to see. These digital creatives are also building strong and loyal communities on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. While people of colour may not get the breaks that they deserve in the mainstream media, the explosion of digital media means that anyone with talent and drive can create their own career. So now we have Screen Nation as a new platform that gives recognition to this talent. The award consisted of categories such as short film, web series, music promos, blogs, magazines, social networks. It was really great to see the web series that I have been watching on YouTube such as Brothers With No Game and Venus vrs Mars finally get their dues and it was even more of a thrill to see the talent behind them in the flesh. The presenter, James Sherwood from Afrobuzz was on point and kept us all entertained. I really think this is the way forward. Many thanks to Charles Thompson and his team for putting on such a fantastic event which went without a hitch. I look forward to next year’s event.
